Example
Hello developer toolsCommon use cases

- Turning a heading into a kebab-case slug for a URL or an anchor link.
- Normalizing a list of setting names into CONSTANT_CASE for environment variables.
Input and output examples
| Input | Output | Notes |
|---|---|---|
hello developer tools | helloDeveloperTools | camelCase joins the words and capitalizes each word after the first. |
parseHTTPResponse | parse-http-response | kebab-case. HTTP stays one word. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Acronyms are kept together. parseHTTPResponse becomes parse-http-response in kebab-case, so HTTP stays one word.
- Mixed-case input can split in unexpected places. hELLO is read as h and ELLO, so retype the text in normal case before converting.
- The lowercase and uppercase options do not split words. Use a word-based style such as camel or snake when you need separators added or removed.
Technical details
Words are split at spaces, punctuation, underscores, and hyphens, and at case boundaries. A lowercase letter or digit followed by an uppercase letter starts a new word, and an uppercase run followed by a capitalized word is split before its last capital. Letters are converted with toLocaleLowerCase and toLocaleUpperCase, so the result follows the browser’s locale rules. The lowercase and uppercase options change the whole text and do not split words.
Frequently asked questions
Are Unicode letters supported?
Common Unicode letters are preserved when the case changes. Word splitting is tuned for developer identifiers, so check the result for words in other scripts.
Why does an all-caps word stay together?
Splitting needs a boundary between a lowercase letter and an uppercase letter. HELLOWORLD has none, so it stays one word. Add spaces between the words first.
Why did hELLO turn into h and ELLO?
A lowercase letter followed by an uppercase letter starts a new word, so the split falls between h and E.
What does Title Case do with acronyms?
Title Case capitalizes the first letter of each word and lowercases the rest, so HTTP status becomes Http Status.
Do the lowercase and uppercase options keep punctuation?
Yes. They change only the letter case. Spaces, hyphens, and underscores stay where they are.
